advertising - it's art!

A Commercials Producer from JWT walked into Unity Records in Beak Street Soho and happened to ask Stuart and Richard if they knew anyone who did the kind of music their shop specialised in. As we'd been working together on their record, they recommended me.

I ended up writing the music for a Kodak commercial. The Director turned out to be Frank Budgen, one of the hottest Directors of the moment.

I then found myself doing loads of commercials from 1992 onwards. Sharwoods, the original "Every Little Helps" campaign for Tesco, BMW, Audi, Vauxhall Frontera, Johnnie Walker, Ford Mondeo, Shell/Ferrari, Cable & Wireless. More recently Orange "Hands" and Transport for London's "My Other Car's A Bus".

The beauty of British Advertising is that the Agencies want to win awards and Directors see themselves as Movie Directors or Auteurs. Art unsullied by commerce. And whenever people say to me "so, you're a Jingles writer then?" I could say, "absolutely not. I'm a composer - this is Art!"
